Two of the most common approaches are known as ‘value’ and ‘growth’ investing. Incorporating both styles to create a balanced portfolio may help smooth out investment returns over time.

Each approach prioritises different types of company. Growth investors tend to look for businesses that are increasing their revenue more quickly than the market as a whole. They are usually willing to pay a little more for companies that are perceived to be capable of delivering this superior growth sustainably into the future, although many growth-focused portfolio managers are disciplined on pricing.

Value investing prioritises companies that are trading at low valuations. The theory is that good companies may go through difficult periods, or spells when their sector is out of favour. Stock market investors often tend to shoot first and ask questions later, meaning that certain sectors might be sold off because of fears that are never realised. Value investors are hoping to pick up good companies at lower prices, waiting until sentiment rebounds.

The risk for growth investors is the potential to overpay for growth prospects, leaving little cushion if these expectations fail to materialise, because prices are already high. With value investing, investors are buying at a lower valuation and therefore there is less risk if a company does go wrong. However, there is the danger that investors buy into a ‘value trap’ – a company that superficially looks good value but where the business is in long-term decline and continues to fall in price.

These two styles have traditionally competed and alternated in stock market dominance, and either may be in the ascendancy at any particular time. Investors often hold both styles as part of their portfolio on the understanding that each is likely to perform well at different points in the market cycle.

Investors often hold both styles as part of their portfolio on the understanding that each is likely to perform well at different points in the market cycle.

Varying performance characteristics

There are times when growth is likely to perform better, and times when value tends to come to the fore. In more exuberant periods, when investors are confident and more ready to take on risk, they are liable to gravitate towards growth companies. When they are more gloomy, or when economic growth is depressed, they may focus on more tangible factors, such as cashflow, dividend distribution or the value of companies’ assets, which favours a value approach.

Interest rates also play an important role. When rates are low, a company that is capable of delivering long-term growth is more valuable. However, when interest rates are higher, and investors can earn more from cash savings, future stock market growth becomes less of a priority. In this case, the more tangible and immediate cashflow associated with value stocks becomes more appealing.

Under normal conditions, investors might expect value and growth to move in and out of fashion as the economic cycle turns. Traditionally, it has made sense to hold both strategies within a single portfolio, providing balance and diversification. In performance terms, value holds the edge over growth over the very long term. Between 1974 and the end of April 2025, according to MSCI, value has delivered an annualised return of 11.6%, compared with 10.7% for growth investment.

When the balance shifts

Each style has its own set of indices, often based on leading market benchmarks but isolating different value or growth characteristics. To monitor performance of value companies, for example, investors may follow the MSCI World Value index, while growth investors often benchmark themselves against the MSCI World Growth index. S&P Global provides similar indices.

The sectors that encompass each style do not tend to be static – they can switch between being very highly valued and slumping in value. The European banking sector is a good example. In the wake of the 2007-09 global financial crisis, no-one wanted to own bank shares and their valuations were at rock bottom – becoming a natural hunting ground for value investors. From that low point, banks have rebuilt their capital, and since the early 2020s higher interest rates have boosted their earnings significantly – so much so that they now fit more naturally into the growth category.

Some sectors almost never make up a significant portion of the value investment category, with technology the obvious example. While technology made up 46% of the MSCI World Growth index as of May 2026, it accounted for just 10.4% of the World Value index, represented by Alphabet, Meta, Micron and Intel.

However, artificial intelligence might change this tendency. Software companies have traditionally been growth stocks, but investors have grown increasingly concerned about the potential impact of AI on their business models, and some companies’ valuations have fallen, potentially making them interesting for value investors.

There are also national markets that are perceived as tilting more toward value or growth. The US, for example, with its large technology industry, is a happier hunting ground for growth investors, while the UK, with its large weightings in healthcare, energy and industrial companies, is a more natural value market. Emerging markets may be more growth-oriented in general, with the exception of commodity-heavy markets such as Latin America.

Influence of technology

The normal pattern of value and growth performance has been disrupted by the biggest technology groups, which have helped generate a strong and enduring run of outperformance for the growth approach. Over the past 10 years, the MSCI World Growth index has produced an annual return of 15.3%, more than 2% more than the broad-based MSCI World index, while the MSCI World Value index has delivered 10.7% a year.

The strongest influence has been the performance of the US megacap companies, prompting questions as to whether the usual reversion to the mean for value and growth strategies will operate in future. The biggest technology groups have become so powerful that value investing has become more difficult. Is an automobile manufacturer cheap, for example, or is it about to have its business model destroyed by self-driving cars? Technology is moving progressively into more parts of the economy and proving increasingly disruptive.

AI may accelerate this disruptive trend. Its long-term impact remains unclear, but it is likely to bring about a fundamental shift in the way people live and work. However, any major shift will lead to mispricing as investors work out whether companies will be winners or losers in the reshaped environment – perhaps bringing opportunities for value and growth investors alike.

Growth investors tend to look for businesses that are increasing their revenue more quickly than the market as a whole, and are often willing to pay a bit more for companies perceived to be capable of delivering superior growth sustainably into the future.

The essence of stock market investing is to find companies that are likely to be worth more in the future than they are today, but there are different ways to do that.
