Fortunately, Luxembourg is a favourable environment for start-ups, and there are many ways to secure funding for them. myLIFE has whipped up a shortlist of potential financing solutions for your business.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Borrow from a bank<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After making your way through your company\u2019s internal resources (your equity capital, that is), your list of potential partners and patrons, and even your friends and relatives, you still have many resources at your disposal. Besides business angels and other venture capitalists, the obvious answer to funding your start-up is to turn to a lending institution. If your plan holds water, your pitch is convincing and you can offer the bank appropriate collateral, you should be able to access <a href=\"https:\/\/guichet.public.lu\/entreprises\/en\/financement-aides\/financement\/apercu-general\/besoins-entreprise\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><u>several types of financing<\/u><\/strong><\/a> (investment loans, leasing arrangements, overdraft facilities, etc.) suited to the needs of businesses.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h2_0\" >Contact the SNCI<\/h2>\n<p>Another option is to reach out to the SNCI, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snci.lu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nationale de Cr\u00e9dit et d\u2019Investissement<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (National Credit and Investment Society). This \u201cpublic-law banking institution specialised in medium and long-term financing of Luxembourg based companies\u201d grants loans for start-ups and business transfers, investment, innovation and exports. On average, this financing covers 25% of industrial project costs, but may cover up to 75% of eligible investments in the case of an equipment loan for craftsmen, tradesmen, and hotel and restaurant owners setting up their first business. Take time to read through the many financing options they have to offer.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h2_1\" >Assistance getting a loan<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The MC (Mutualit\u00e9 de Cautionnement)<\/strong>. Don\u2019t have enough collateral to satisfy the bank? You can apply for assistance from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cautionnement.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Mutualit\u00e9 de Cautionnement<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. This organisation\u2019s mission is to make it easier to access bank financing. To do so, it serves as a guarantor with the bank for companies holding business permits.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpme.lu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The MPME (Mutualit\u00e9 des PME)<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. The MPME supports Luxembourg SMEs, primarily by acting as a financial partner in the provision of sureties for all or part of their project financing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h2_2\" >Alternatives to bank loans<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Business angels<\/strong>. Don\u2019t forget about <a href=\"https:\/\/my-life.lu\/en\/get-your-company-off-the-ground-with-the-help-of-a-business-angel-20007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>business angels<\/strong><\/span><\/a> when getting your company off the ground. They become involved right from the start, and generally choose to fund young, innovative businesses. In addition to providing between 10% and 30% of your capital, they can give you the benefit of their experience and network of contacts. You can count on a business angel (if you let them in on the accounts)!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Venture capitalists<\/strong>. If your company is showing promising signs of growth and you want financing to help it expand quickly, a <a href=\"https:\/\/my-life.lu\/en\/jump-start-your-start-up-with-the-help-of-a-venture-capitalist-20012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>venture capitalist<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (VC) might be the right choice for you. In exchange for shares, and often a seat on the board of directors as well, a VC can contribute a tidy sum to give your business a boost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Declined for a loan? Don\u2019t despair; there are alternatives. If you have little or no capital yourself, you can turn to microfinance institutions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Microfinance institutions<\/strong>. Declined for a loan? Find out more from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada-microfinance.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Maison de la microfinance<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (house of microfinance), managed by ADA, or go directly to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microlux.lu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Microlux<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crowdfunding<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada-microfinance.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Crowdfunding<\/strong><\/span><\/a> is another (now very popular) financing solution. \u00a0It works by bringing together a large number of people through an online platform to finance a project or start-up. The people making financial contributions to invest in your business may be compensated with a stake in the company, but this isn\u2019t the only option. Crowdfunding can also be based on compensation in kind. In this case, in exchange for their financial support, private investors receive the product or service in question once it has been developed, sometimes at a discount.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h2_3\" >Investment funds<\/h2>\n<p>Reaching out to an investment fund is another way to grow your company. The SNCI (Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nationale de Cr\u00e9dit et d\u2019Investissement) and the EIF (European Investment Fund) have jointly established the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovation.public.lu\/en\/financer\/competitivite\/lff\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Luxembourg Future Fund<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. With a volume of \u20ac150\u00a0million, this fund invests directly and indirectly in innovative SMEs in the start-up, development and growth phases.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exponcapital.com\/luxembourg-impact-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Digital Tech Fund<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0 is a seed fund for start-ups in the field of ICT. Created by the Luxembourg government and seven private investors (including BIL), it provides financial support for budding firms in the launch phase.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h2_4\" >Government grants<\/h2>\n<p>The Ministry of the Economy in Luxembourg offers a range of grants for start-ups and established SMEs, which are provided for by law (aides de la loi-cadre classes moyennes). These grants can be a great help to entrepreneurs, whether they\u2019re in industry, commerce, construction or services.\u00a0The state aid scheme was reformed in Luxembourg in 2018. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/my-life.lu\/en\/new-government-aid-for-smes-in-luxembourg-21006\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Changes were made and new forms of aid were introduced<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h2_5\" >Special initiatives<\/h2>\n<p>As a final tip on our tour of the financing landscape, don\u2019t forget Luxembourg\u2019s efforts to create a welcoming community for start-ups. Most of these events are really competitions allowing participants to secure subsidies and meet potential investors.
